What is Teaching HOPE?
| Teaching HOPE is a one of a kind
501(c)(3) tax exempt organization aiming to help
orphaned youth to transition to independent adulthood.
We have started our operations in Colombia with the
vision to expand to other countries as our model is
developed and tried. Colombia was chosen as the country for Teaching HOPE’s pilot project due to its current social environment. The country is recovering from decades of violence, which resulted in a high number of displaced people, leaving many children orphaned or abandoned. While the state is assisting orphaned children, the resources are insufficient and many children do not receive appropriate care. Moreover, state support is not provided for older orphans who “age out” of the orphanage system at age 18. In turn, this leaves many older orphans without skills for obtaining a job. Most end up with menial jobs or homeless. Amparo, an 80 bed orphanage for young females in Bogota, has a computer lab with 18 computers and an excellent teacher for the past three years. This is the first exposure to computers most of these girls have had. English lessons have also been taught for one year at Amparo. |
